Could someone be registering a illegitimate mortgage against your home to access your equity (cash) or placing a fraudulent lien forcing the sale of your property? Identity theft is on the rise. Mortgage fraud is another form of identity theft. The most common form of mortgage fraud is conducted with the knowledge of the registered homeowner. CASH Society, however, has received anecdoctal information that mortgage fraud without the knowledge of the homeowner has occurred in BC. Although W-FIVE describes mortgage fraud as a crime sweeping the country, there is no statistical data available to determine the risk to BC homeowners. More facts are needed to determine the extend of the risk to legitimate homeowners currently and in the future. Please contact our Society if you are a victim of mortgage fraud in BC.
